<image:caption>Carcosa, 2018 Graphite and color pencil on paper, 83.5” x 49” Photo: Jeff McLane Odd Ark • LA is pleased to present Between Planets, an exhibition of new drawings by Adam D. Miller. The show will open January 12 and remain on view through February 24, 2019. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, January 12, from 4:00 to 8:00pm The exhibition focuses on 4 large-scale vibrant and multi-colored drawings arranged on one wall of the gallery. Drawn with colored pencil on paper, Miller’s works are the result of repetitive and deliberate mark-making similar to chisel marks on carved stone. The results are a combination of patterns and geometric shapes that are tightly organized to compose a quilt-like matrix whose sectional elements comprise a whole. As the patterns expand and contract simultaneously pulling the viewer inward and outward, large shapeshifting faces emerge and like the ancient carvings on Easter Island, they reveal little. In the works of Miller, there is a sense that these forms are archetypal, permeating through the strata of time, from our ancestors hallucinations and pareidolia, to the distortions of our own image reflected in the black mirror of our current tech-gnosis. Through art and archetypes, knowing one’s self charts a path to finding the ‘Others’. A limited edition artist book has been produced to coincide with Between Planets featuring full color reproductions of the works in the exhibition with text by Benjamin Weissman, and an excerpt from a short story by Robert E. Howard. Adam D. Miller (b. 1982, Bellevue, Washington) lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his Master of Fine Arts from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA in 2008 and a Bachelor of Arts from The California State University of Sacramento in 2005. His work has been exhibited in group exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, Arkansas, Texas and Japan. Miller has had solo shows at Steve Turner Contemporary Gallery in Los Angeles and Rocksbox Contemporary in Portland, Oregon, amongst others. <image:title>ALYSE EMDUR</image:title>
<image:caption>In Skunks and Flowers, Emdur’s skunks are a stand-in for the feminine- sensual, mysterious, and sometimes stinky. Although nocturnal, her skunks slink and shift through a colorful daylight floral that points to the optimistic designs of Vera Neumann, whose scarves, tea sets, tablecloths, bedspreads, and curtains, famously dressed the women and homes of the 1960’s and 70’s. Emdur’s paintings, produced with ink and matte acrylic-based gouache on paper, mix the colorful opaque print style of Vera’s floral patterns with a contrasting intervention of feathery renderings of black and white skunks. The skunks moment of compositional crossing is humorous and emotive as the skunks fur markings reveal a cipher of “V” messaging. Skunks and Flowers depict an olfactory collision between the floral and the sulfur-containing chemicals that skunks spray from their anal scent glands as they demand personal space. In Emdur’s paintings, we find, not the skunks of Bambi or Pepé Le Pew, but rather those that many Angelenos find in their backyards at night. Emdur’s idea of a domestic backyard is a flattened gestural version of a secret garden filled, not just with marks that represent flowers, but with other cycle of life wanderings- hand drawn reproductive diagrams, caricatures of authority figures, self-help texts from the golden age of pop psychology, and chapter titles appropriated from a book that helps children cope with death. <image:title>ANDY HOPE 1930</image:title>
<image:caption>Market is Done is a presentation of film related works from ‘VERTICAL HORIZON’ a film produced by berlin-based artist Andy Hope 1930, for the 2017 Venice Biennale and recently screened in Los Angeles at Hauser & Wirth November 16th 2017. ‘VERTICAL HORIZON’ is situated ‘after the future,’ as Franco Berardi puts it, when utopian visions have come to an end. Fran Athens, a character shifting between masquerade and sci-fi personage, tries to resist this proclamation of finitude, creating the illusion of embodying a character within a ‘real’ science fiction narrative. Despite his efforts, the fiction repeatedly collapses and Fran finds himself trapped in a present journey, which is marked by untoward social encounters and relished by moments of estrangement, melancholia, and alienation. Also included in the exhibition are works produced in Los Angeles by Andy Hope 1930, an audio loop, and a looped film clip from ‘VERTICAL HORIZON’. *All works courtesy of Hauser & Wirth Click for more information on ‘VERTICAL HORIZON’ www.andyhope1930.com *Special thanks to Hauser & Wirth About the Artist Andy Hope 1930 draws together motifs from cosmic phenomena, self-portraiture, and superhero fiction to explore existentialism and contemporary society. Working across painting, sculpture and film Hope focuses on the devastating consequences of isolation that social life has attained under the banner of self-optimisation and flexibility, the ‘vertical horizon’ that everyone maintains on his touchscreen as his own domain. Hope’s recent exhibitions include ‘#believe’, Lomex Gallery, New York (2017); 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (2017); ‘Enjoy Thank You’, Gabriele Senn Galerie, Vienna, Austria (2016); ‘Black Fat Fury Road‘, Galerie Guido W. Baudach, Berlin, Germany (2016); ‘FRIDAY IS TOO LATE’, Autocenter, Berlin, Germany (2015); ‘UNappropriated Activities’, Hauser & Wirth Zürich (2015); When Dinosaurs Become Modernist’ at Inverleith House, Edinburgh, Scotland (2012); and ‘Medley Tour by Andy Hope 1930’ at Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover, Germany, where Hope first exhibited the ‘Medleys’, a precursor to the ‘X-Medleys’ (2012).</image:caption>

<image:title>ALIKA COOPER</image:title>
<image:caption>Odd Ark • LA is pleased to announce Buoy, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Alika Cooper. For Buoy, Alika Cooper constructs enigmatic compositions by cropping, flattening, and zooming in on collected photographs of women in bathing suits. Swatches of painted and dyed fabric are precisely cut, inlayed and collaged into a "reassembled" version of the photograph in which the figures are equated with their backgrounds. Cooper's paintings maintain a buoyancy between figuration and abstraction. In the original photographs, women sat basking in the sun, posed. In Cooper’s translation, they barely reveal themselves. They arrive floating, partially submerged in space, yet insistent. Cooper’s paintings reflect her Southern Californian upbringing and an emphasis on swimming in suburban pools. The works externalize complex interior layers of female identity. They take form in a realm of simultaneity. Hair bleeds into skin, while clothing fades into the background. A buoy is an anchored float that serves many purposes. It marks safe zones through which ships can pass, protecting them from collisions. As Cooper’s figures float, they signal the weight that women carry within a culture that objectifies them. Their floral fashions are warning signs and markers of survival; their zippers and knots bind, cover, and have the potential to expose. Initially masked as style and play, the invisibilized exertion of women’s work bobs to the surface. ALIKA COOPER (b. 1979, Guam) lives and works in Los Angeles. She received both her MFA and BFA from California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA. Solo and two person exhibitions include Madeline Cake SITUATIONS, New York; Wet Suits Good Weather Gallery, Little Rock; Have A Sex Fort Gondo, Saint Louis; The Disguised Edge MULHERIN, Toronto; UPBRAID Night Gallery, Los Angeles; and GLASS Eleanor Harwood Gallery, San Francisco. She was the recipient of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation grant, the MagicTrillium Press Yesland Prize, and the Jack and Gertrude Murphy Fellowship. She has participated in The Viewing Program at The Drawing Center, New York; MOTION PICTURE at The Saint Louis Art Museum; and was Artist in Residence at Galleria Studio Legale in Marzano Appio, Italy and at Marble House Project, Dorset, Vermont. <image:title>LAUREN SATLOWSKI</image:title>
<image:caption>In her third one-person exhibition, Lauren Satlowski shows a body of paintings manifesting psychological spaces that are both claustrophobic and vast. The lone protagonists of Satlowski’s paintings find themselves in power struggles with the very bodies they occupy. They are flimsy, nebulous and without bones. Drawing on cinematic tropes from genres of horror and science fiction, Satlowski conjures a droning sense of the other. The iconic subjects in these paintings experience the anxiety of occupying female bodies matched with the urgency of realizing their power. The figures are not idealized, but their bodies are still objectified on glossy oil painted surfaces, a medium that calls for a reconciliation with a history that struggles through anxieties of power, possession and objectification. These images characterize a consciousness and body at a moment of crisis. Confronting the potential for transformation, one must determine whether it’s becoming or undoing. Overarching is the sense that these uncanny subjects hover in their own ether, untethered and unburdened by the viewers’ projected associations, yet our human need to mythologize the drama of our pleasure and pain finds transformative healing and satisfaction in our imagined surrogates. Lauren Satlowski was born in Detroit, Michigan. She received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 2013 and a BFA from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan in 2009. Her work has been presented in group exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, Mexico, Europe and has had solo exhibitions at Embassy in Los Angeles and Wasserman Projects in Detroit. Satlowski lives and works in Los Angeles. For more information, please contact: odd.ark.la@gmail.com PRESS: READ GADZINAS BELL REVIEW ON ARTILLERY MAGAZINE</image:caption>

<image:title>BRIAN RANDOLPH</image:title>
<image:caption>ODD ARK•LA is pleased to announce The Symmetry of Separation, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Brian Randolph. In each of these recent ink on paper works, Randolph has used a restrained drawing vocabulary of vertical and diagonal lines to create a complex symmetrical field configuration. Interconnected patterns in rows like lines of abstract multi-dimensional text emerge from the center of a highly ordered nest, blurred towards the edge by a visual delay. With titles like Pulse Scroll and Breathing Page the drawings visualize a kind of illuminated manuscript floating in hyperspace. A swarm of component parts hanging together in a fragile balance, evoking the bioelectric field of the body, the vibrating superstrings of theoretical physics, and the emerging and dissolving patterns of light seen in altered states of consciousness. Randolph’s works are resonant with the time spent making them and the patient cultivation of a precise image drawn by hand. Imperfections in the line, slight compressions of the grid, traces of erased graphite and the handling of the paper remain as an index of a diligent process. Brian Randolph received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2001. His work has appeared in solo exhibitions at Gallery Four and School 33 in Baltimore. In 2017, Randolph was included in Parallel Cities at Ms. Barber's, and Set The Table at BBQ LA, both in Los Angeles. Other group exhibitions include Tillou Fine Art and Spring Break Art Show, New York, LAVA Projects, Steve Turner Gallery, and La Cienega Projects, Los Angeles, and Zic Zerp in Rotterdam. <image:caption>ONE DAY ONLY! Viewing art in traditional and formal settings can be an alienating experience and physically unaccommodating, however, for many of us, art is a tonic, a soma, or even an analgesic… that calls for a more tangible and comfortable viewing experience. AN ART DEN breaks down conventional systems of art viewing and invites visitors to sit comfortably on a pillowed floor and sift through works by over 100 artists. Works may be leafed through, held, shared and passed around to other attendees - not unlike an Opium Den or Hooka Lounge. This direct and communal viewing experience opens up exciting possibilities of chance operation and conversation about the work that will hopefully be both deep and expansive. All of the works will be for sale and affordably priced - ranging from $20 to $900 (with an average price $150). Purchased works will be available to take home.</image:caption>

<image:title>KRISTY LUCK</image:title>
<image:caption>ODD ARK • LA is pleased to present, If I can imagine this light, then I can work all day, an exhibition of new paintings by Kristy Luck. The show will open March 9 and remain on view through April 21, 2019. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, March 9, from 4:00 to 8:00pm Painted with oil and cold wax on canvas, the paintings of Kristy Luck hover between abstraction and representation, the natural world and the potential of a world imagined, a paradigm that is both mythic and personal. In these works, representation is an entry point, while abstraction opens the work to the supernatural and the ineffable. Indications of environment, such as landscape, estuaries, flora and other natural forms, appear and then recede into grounds of color. The environments of Luck’s paintings, feel suspended at dawn or dusk, times of day when there are no direct light sources and shadows become diffused. Dawn and dusk have a way of equalizing color as well as collapsing the figure/ground relationship. For many, this liminality is the most psychologically introspective time of the day, a feeling that resonates in Luck’s paintings. Her color palette also hints at the natural world while simultaneously pulling the viewer back to full awareness that we are looking at paint on canvas. Evident artifacts of process, such as texture, brush marks, feathered edges of transparent and opaque paint application further expand the experiential bridge between the natural world and the nature of painting. Kristy Luck (b. 1985) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. She received her Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL in 2014, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Rockford University, Rockford, IL in 2010. Her work has been exhibited in London, Montreal, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Iceland with solo exhibitions at Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Chicago and Eastside International (ESXLA) in Los Angeles amongst others. She was the recipient of a Lighthouse Works Fellowship Award in 2017. 7101 North Figueroa Street Unit E, Los Angeles, CA 90042 (323) 600-5768 http://www.oddarkla.com</image:caption>

<image:title>MICHAEL DECKER</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the past decade, artist Michael Decker has collected thousands of bendable figurines commonly known as bendies, produced for their malleable play. Although they rarely vary in their construction of pliable wire covered in rubber, the figures range from generic animals and characters of pop-culture (Gumby, Simpsons, Santa, Aliens...) to the emblemized promotional material as well as sought-after rare collectibles. 'Ben D' is a human-sized figure compiled by Decker from these differing personalities and archetypes. His composite form features a head of hair made from Kushball bendies and Gumbys for toes, a studded belt made of 'Jack In The Box' Jack hats and a leopard-print jacket with contrasting anarchist symbol. His dress seems eerily informed. Leaning languidly against the gallery wall, 'Ben D' evokes a casual, disarming poise, trying to blend in amongst a more rigid human crowd. Accompanying this figure are three large illustrations showing a hedonistic micro-verse of sensual exploration amongst a multi-perspective landscape. Dwellers of this patchwork environment engage with each other in a variance of congenial and sexual poses, suggesting cooperative marketplace harmony or consensual unbridled orgiastic pleasure. In both 'Ben D' and the accompanying illustrations, the sum of the parts are indeed greater than the whole. Decker has made an intricate process of contextualizing relationships amongst bendies and free-form nudists, each a statement of making peace with chaos, complexity, multiplicity, and possibility. Each form's unbridled ecstasy and peaceful context in relationship to each other acts as if to campaign for unity, saying, "We're All Counting On You, Mike." <image:title>NARUMI NEKPENEKPEN</image:title>
<image:caption>ODD ARK • LA is pleased to present Toothache, the first solo exhibition by ceramicist Narumi Nekpenekpen. The show will open September 14th, 2019 and will remain on view through October 20th, 2019. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, September 14th. 2019 from 4-8 pm. In the work of Nekpenekpen, slab porcelain clay is pushed and pulled by hand into an assembled tableaux of personal allegory. Plump figures with “cutesy” wandering eyes, luscious lips, sparkling stars and hearts coexist with funky, weighty abstractions and interlocking figures wearing bulky heavy boots (similar to the Dr. Martens worn by the artist.) Patchworks of woven clay and clunky hand-modeled chains evoke and negotiate complexities of human history, the ontology of trauma and of self-introspection. The sculpted relief of text becomes emblematic; like a physical graffiti embodying states of consciousness, while sgraffito notations on the hand-painted and glazed surfaces narrate from loose personal archives - championing the composited figures into tangible wholes. Nekpenekpen refers to her protagonists as “bb’s,” a shorthand nickname for ‘Babies;’ a term of endearment that underscores the deep and personal relationship the artist has to her work. It is also a reminder that the nature of bisque clay as a raw material is inherently fragile, yet, when nurtured correctly - surprisingly resilient. Born in 1998 to a Japanese mother and a Nigerian father, Narumi Nekpenekpen was raised in both Kashiwa, Japan and Los Angeles, California. Nekpenekpen has exhibited in various group exhibitions including "INSIGHTS" at the University Art Museum, Long Beach, and is the recipient of the Olsen Ceramic scholarship. She is currently studying ceramics at California State University Long Beach under an impressive roster of contemporary ceramicists such as Jennie Jieun Lee, Tony Marsh, Christopher Miles and Ruby Neri. Nekpenekpen currently lives and works in Los Angeles. 7101 North Figueroa Street Unit E, Los Angeles, CA 90042 (323) 600-5768 http://www.oddarkla.com</image:caption>

<image:title>A STORE SHOW</image:title>
<image:caption>ODD ARK • LA is pleased to present “A Store Show” - the Gallery’s first group exhibition since opening its doors November 2017. With an impressive roster of over ninety Los Angeles-based artists, the show will open November 9th, and remain on view through December 15th, 2019. The storefront ODD ARK • LA currently occupies was previously a small neighborhood convenience store that offered an eclectic mix of snacks, soft drinks, cigarettes, booze, lottery tickets and knick-knacks amongst other goods. For this exhibition, we will revisit the history of our space as the gallery is transformed back into a small bodega-like market, lined with makeshift shelves, hand-made display cases, clothing-rack and other support structures that tweak conventional methods of displaying art and tease strategies of merchandising and sales. Ninety-plus artists from the city of Los Angeles will contribute and create goods for the “Store.” Multiples, editions and unique works will explore ideas of utility, lifestyle, commerce and consumerism, value and multiplicity. ODD ARK • LA‘s location on California’s historic Route 66 will further conjure themes of Americana and the funky small roadside markets often offering an array of eccentric goods, oddities, souvenirs, strange snacks and the unexpected weird side-show attraction. Some of the works in the exhibition were pre-existing and chosen as “store inventory”, and other works have been specifically produced by the artists prompted by the exhibition theme of “A Store Show.” Functioning as a market, some multiple works will be available for purchase and carry, while integral works to the structure of the “store” will remain in the installation until the end of the exhibition. Prices will range from $5 dollars to $7000 with an average price of $49.99. Adam D. Miller, Adam Rabinowitz, Aili Schmeltz, Aitor Lajarin, Alika Cooper, Alyse Emdur, Andrew Cortez, Andy Hope 1930, Angel Chen, Anna Breininger, Aubrey Ingmar Manson, Bettina Hubby, Brian Cooper, Brian Randolph, Brittany Mojo, Charles Irwin, Conrad Ruiz, Daniel Cummings, Daniel Gibson, Daniel Hawkins, Danny Bowman, Dave Muller, Delia Brown, Devon Oder, Devon Tsuno, Don Edler, Eddie Ruscha, Elizabeth Huey, Eric Ernest Johnson, Ewa Wojciak, Francesca Gabbiani, George Stoll, Hayley Barker, Isabel Theselius, Jacob Melchi, Jaime Muñoz, James Herman, Jamie Felton, Janet Levy, Jason David, Jason Leinwand, Jason Yates, Jenene Nagy, Jenn Berger, Jennifer Rochlin, Jim Shaw, Joel Kyack, John Knuth, John Zane Zappas, Jon Pylypchuk, Jonathan Casella, Joshua West Smith, Julia Schwartz, Juliana Paciulli, Julie Henson, Karen Lofgren, Kathryn O’Halloran, Katya Usvitsky, Kirk Nelson, Kysa Johnson, Laura Cooper, Laura London, Laurie Nye, Lawrence Weiner, Lindsay Preston Zappas, Lisa Ann Auerbach, Liv Aanrud, Lydia Maria Pfeffer, Mabel Moore, Marc Horowitz, Marnie Weber, Mary Anna Pomonis, Michael Decker, Michelle Fierro, Mike Kelley, Molly Larkey, Mungo Thomson, Nadege Monchera Baer, Narumi Nekpenekpen, Nevena Binney, Nick Brown, Nick Taggart, Nicolas Shake, Paul Theriault, Pearl C. <image:caption>For Intersect Chicago 2020, we are delighted to present new ceramic works by Los Angeles based artist Vince Palacios. Using clay and glaze, Palacios focuses on the traditional form of a vessel. With the gusto of experimentation, multiple glazing techniques fired at varying temperatures result in dynamic textures and layers of vibrant colors. Palacios vessels are an exciting confluence of skill and knowledge of ceramic processes, raw naturalistic improvisation and formalist esthetics.</image:caption>

<image:title>BRIAN RANDOLPH</image:title>
<image:caption>ODD ARK•LA is pleased to present The Septum, our second solo exhibition by artist Brian Randolph. The Exhibition will be on view from September 12th - October 17th, 2020. For The Septum, Randolph has produced a series of new dynamic colored-pencil works on paper that are mounted on wood panels. Each composition begins with precisely gridded measurements and the meticulous rendering of patterned forms. Using wax-based colored pencil, Randolph builds up varying degrees of hued luminosity and opacity. The saturated surfaces and symmetrical compositions are the result of a rigorous process and a thoughtful reflection into the relationship between the body's biological processes of perception and the ontology of formal aesthetics. In discussing the works in the exhibition, Randolph states, "While I was working on my last show, I began drawing rows of ribboning lines on scrap paper to get the pen flowing. This led to more formally organized blocks of line, somewhat like blocks of text, accented by indentures and space between paragraphs. I was looking for a way to work in color, and I started to draw the line with negative space, filling all the space around it in colored pencil. I chose to use a split composition for this show, like the two facing pages of an open book. I wanted to represent the connection between two people, and the sense of our ever-forking path, the choice we are presented with each moment. I tried to create an image that would reflect the feeling of all our senses being in stereo, and hold the attention in a balanced and consonant way. The world comes to us through our double doors of perception, joined together along a vertical seam of symmetry, like the septum that divides the sinus cavity. Even the tongue has a septum dividing its two halves, our taste buds are arranged in pairs reflecting each other on its twinned surface. Our experience is a binary of hemispheres, always bonded and facing each other in a critical feedback relationship with one another, amounting to what we mostly experience as a unified whole." Brian Randolph (b. 1979 Canton, Connecticut) received his BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in 2001. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally with solo exhibitions at ODD ARK• LA in Los Angeles (CA), Gallery Four and School 33, both in Baltimore (MD). Selected group exhibitions include 'A Store Show' at ODD ARK •LA, 'Parallel Cities' at Ms. Barber's and 'Set the Table' at BBQ LA, both in Los Angeles, Tillou Fine Art, Spring Break Art Show in New York, LAVA Projects, Steve Turner Gallery, and Las Cienega Projects in Los Angeles, and Zic Zerp in Rotterdam. His work is included in the permanent collection of Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Brian Randolph lives and works in Los Angeles. <image:caption>Carter Potter was born in Los Angeles, CA. He earned a BA in 1987 and an MFA in 1990, both from UCLA. Although primarily a painter, his work also takes in a range of found objects and materials, most notably movie film. A reflection on the southland’s most emblematic industry, it is also one with which Carter has firsthand experience, having worked for some years as a production assistant at a computer animation firm (where he first encountered the scrap film that he would go on to utilize in his painting practice), at a traditional ink and paint animation firm, and ultimately, years later, as an assistant producer on many live-action films, both for television and for theatrical release. Carter has exhibited widely throughout the US and Europe, with solo exhibitions at Angles Gallery in Santa Monica, Julie Saul Gallery and Jose Frière Fine Art, both in New York City; Rocket in London, England; Galerie H. S. Steinek in Vienna, Austria; and Sue Spaid Fine Art in Los Angeles. Selected group exhibitions include LACE, Margo Leavin Gallery, MOCA, ACME, all in Los Angeles; The Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York; The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Kerlin Gallery, Dublin, Ireland; Kunsthalle Lophem, Bruges, Belgium; amongst others. Permanent Collections include The Panza Collection in Varese, Italy; The Museum of Modern Art, Stiftung Ludwig (mumok), Vienna, Austria; The Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts; The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, California and The Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, California. Carter’s work has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Art in America,The New York Times, Der Standard, Die Presse, Newsweek, Artweek, Art News, Art Issues, Artforum, Frieze, Modern Painters and Artnet amongst others. <image:caption>Emo Landscape IV, 2020, oil on linen, 20” x 16” ODD ARK•LA is pleased to present 'Chickasaw Moon', a series of twelve recent paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Laurie Nye. On view and by appointment only from April 24 through June 4, 2021. What is it in human nature that calls us to internalize the exterior natural world? This mystery and urge has been a vehicle for the arts for as long as we can trace humanity's presence on earth. From science to the poetics of metaphor, we can find the outside world mirrored within us. Over the past 10 months, Laurie Nye has been on retreat to her family home in Tennessee, an inspiring setting of flora and verdant landscape, a prime place to reground and reconnect to the natural world. In nature, we witness the fundamental axiom of our own nature: the process of birth, life, and death, and the possibility of cyclical renewal. In Nye’s paintings, this process is inherent in composed landscapes that are built of forms that are in continual flux, a flowing labyrinth simultaneously unfolding upward as well as the eventual return downward toward the ground. The series of 12 paintings reimagines this same landscape rendered in a spectrum of color palettes, colors that explore the nuanced complexities of our own psyche and inner contemplation, while also conjuring the interiority of other known emotive landscape paintings, especially the works of Edvard Munch and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. For a prolific painter who typically works on several large scale canvases at one time in her Los Angeles studio, Nye’s pandemic retreat to her family's Tennessee home presented interesting studio restrictions. Setting up a workspace in her mother’s kitchenette, and limited to working on one painting at a time, Nye discovered a quietude and intimacy that she found “oddly liberating,” along with a chance to reflect on and to process the past four years of our charged social and political upheaval and a global pandemic that forced many into an imposed retreat socially while also finding a much needed reconciliation with the natural world. The intimate paintings in Chickasaw Moon are the result of the artist’s own reflective process of pulling the outer world within, a cycle that finds final resolve on the surface of Nye’s carefully rendered application of oil on linen. Laurie Nye (b. 1972, Memphis, TN) received her BFA from the Memphis College of Art (Memphis, TN), and her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts (Valencia, CA). Nye’s work has recently been the subject of solo and group exhibitions at Philip Martin Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), ODD ARK LA (Los Angeles, CA), The Pit (Glendale, CA), Big Pictures LA (Los Angeles) Blake and Vargas (Berlin, Germany), The Dot Project (London, UK), Day and Night Gallery (Atlanta, GA), La Loma Projects (Pasadena, CA), and Unpaved Gallery (Yucca Valley, CA). Nye is a founding member of the all-female collective, The Binder of Women. Her work has been reviewed in such publications as Artillery, Los Angeles Times, Artforum, FAD Magazine and LA Weekly. Nye lives and works in Los Angeles, CA</image:caption>

<image:title>AMELIA LOCKWOOD - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Vine Reverb, 2021, ceramic, 19.5 x 19.5 x 19.5 inches ODD ARK • LA is pleased to present Mondegreen Nursery, a selection of recent ceramic works by Los Angeles-based artist Amelia Lockwood. On view from Oct. 2 - Nov. 6, 2021. A socially-distanced opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, October 2, from 4-7pm. For Mondegreen Nursery, Amelia Lockwood uses clay with etched, glazed surfaces to manifest in physical form 3-D cartographies of interdimensional self-realization. Lockwood’s works trace connections from ancient, esoteric and spiritual maps to the constructs of modern-day board games. The overlapping aesthetics of both create structures in which the mind and body are aligned towards achieving a resolution through navigational strategies. The artist’s use of symmetry throughout her work suggests that the forms are sprouting outwards, or moving towards a central omega point. This symmetry sets up mandala-like arenas or amphitheaters: a place for congregation, theater, and game. Some forms also appear to be candelabras, an ongoing theme in the artist’s oeuvre, which furthers the feeling of ritual as well as illumination within the inner and outer cosmology of psychic play. Included in Mondegreen Nursery are a grouping of ceramic chickens, referencing late 19th Century folk art whittling traditions from the artist’s home state of Pennsylvania as well as taking inspiration from the neighboring fowl of her recent adoptive home in the rural region of the country of Georgia. Lockwood’s chickens are supernatural with ornamented bodies — giving the impression that these chickens might have access to elemental truths. As mystical creatures, her chickens may be the ‘gamekeepers’ to Lockwood’s larger works, or perhaps they are birthing cosmic eggs just beyond her earthen clay bodies. Amelia Lockwood (b. Stroudsburg, PA,1990) received her BFA from Syracuse University (2012), completed post-bac studies at the University of Colorado (2016), and received her MFA from The University of California, Los Angeles (2020). Selected exhibitions include, Maia’s Pool, Various Small Fires, James Wright Gallery, In Lieu, One Trick Pony, and Five Car Garage Gallery in Los Angeles amongst others. Lockwood lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.</image:caption>

<image:title>RECENT - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Exhibition Dates: Saturday, November 13th - Saturday, December 4, 2021 ODD ARK • LA is pleased to present a very special project by artist Marnie Weber, Songs Forevermore -- an installation and record release exhibition of 250 hand-collaged and painted unique LP cover’s for the vinyl album soundtrack of Weber’s visionary feature film The Day of Forevermore. On view from Nov 13 - Dec 4, 2021. A socially-distanced opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, November 13th, from 3-6pm. For each album cover, Weber has sourced from a wealth of imagery from the artists’ own oeuvre. Recurring characters from the bizarre, humorous and dreamy weave together various narratives from Weber’s films, performance and collaged work-- all combined with painterly processes of beautiful iridescent Decalcomania and sprayed and splattered paint. The albums will be presented on floor to ceiling shelves as a colorful densely arranged grid that will allow for unexpected and exciting combinations of imagery and loose visual narrative. For the occasion, Weber’s film The Day of Forevermore will be available online for free viewing from October 22 to December 4, 2021 through Vimeo, or the artist’s webpage at marnieweber.com/forevermore The Day of Forevermore, is a modern fairy tale, a daughter (Colette Weber Shaw) struggles to find freedom from her imposing mother, an elderly demented witch (Marnie Weber), on the mysterious farm of Forevermore Acres. The farm is a rundown junk strewn ranch full of aged witches and misfit monsters filmed at the legendary Los Angeles Zorthian Ranch. The mother’s plans to indoctrinate her daughter into her coven of darkness are interrupted by three curious teens that wander onto the farm. The daughter, yearning for a life beyond the farm, is a compassionate and innocent soul but may have a bit of the devil in her when called upon to take power.</image:caption>
